About Burning on Denman Island

The fire hazard and burn permit information on the Denman Island Weather page should not be considered as official. I do my best to keep it up to date (some of it is automatic), but it is provided for general information only.

Persons wanting to know whether burning is permitted should refer to the roadside signs maintained by the Fire Department, to the DIVFD website, or call the Denman Island firehall at 335-0345.

Fire Hazard

The fire hazard information on my weather page is updated automatically from BC Forestry's website. Their fire hazard rating is based on variable factors such as temperature, humidity and soil moisture content. A sudden change in weather, such as a rainfall can cause the rating calculated by Forestry to change dramatically, but temporarily.

The Fire Department uses this information, but does not necessarily change the official rating for an event that is obviously temporary. So, for example, if a rainshower causes the calculated rating to drop from Extreme to Low for one day, but it is obvious that the rating will jump back up to High within a couple of days, the Fire Department might ignore the temporary Low and move the official rating to High. The official fire hazard is whatever the Fire Department says it is!

Burn Permits / Fire Bans

Any burn permit or fire ban information on my weather page is updated manually by me, based on information from the Fire Department. I get this information from the roadside signs, and you can too. Again, I do my best to keep it up to date, but if I am unable to update it for some reason, it could be out of date. The Fire Department's information should be considered the correct version at all times.

Always refer to the roadside signs or call the Fire Department to find out the official fire hazard rating if you are planning a burn pile, and comply with all Burn Permit and Fire Ban regulations.
